JESSE HELLER

JESSE HELLER

Coach/Co-Owner/Operations Manager

I love making people stronger and healthier than they ever thought possible. My sports background is in gymnastics, wrestling, soccer and lacrosse. I devoted my youth to sports and specifically to the pursuit of gymnastic virtuosity which I still chase to this day through CrossFit. I spent 5 years in the Marines, and 13 years so far as a fireman. It is my passion to coach my members at SAW. I believe in education and I attend training all over the country in order to bring it home to my members. I found my way to CrossFit years ago in an attempt to try and get in shape after many bouts with back pain and a lackluster relationship with running. It only took 1 session and I was hooked. Since finding the right programming and coaches, I have been back pain free for 3 years! Try SAW and see where we can take you!

Head of Coaching and Programming/Co-Owner

Before finding CrossFit, I followed a variety of strength and conditioning programs, most of which emphasized building “glamour” muscles. Gym sessions were 2-3 hours with a heavy upper body focus and minimal cardio. While deployed with the Marines in 2007, I stumbled upon a CrossFit workout in a magazine and decided to test it out. Even with all the lifting I did, and my conditioning as a Marine, the CF workout, or WOD, whipped my butt. I have been doing CrossFit almost exclusively ever since.
CrossFit is more than a workout, and SAW is much more than just a gym. We’re home to a community of like minded people who understand that fitness is a journey you take one day at a time. The focus shouldn’t be on numbers, or times, or scores. The focus should be on getting the mechanics right, mastering the basics, and learning the fundamental techniques that will keep you safe and active through your fitness career. We strive for this daily at SAW.
I have been a coach and programmer (WOD creator) officially, since 2013. During that time, I have helped change hundreds of people’s bodies and minds, and have also grown as an athlete and a person through the community I interact with. I consider SAW my home away from home, and hope to expand the reach that CrossFit has within this area.

KATRI HELLER

KATRI HELLER

Coach/Co-owner/Business Manager

My involvement in sports and fitness began at an early age with exposure to gymnastics, soccer, downhill skiing, and competitive swimming. I spent 12 years as a competitive swimmer and 7 years playing both field hockey and lacrosse. In college I picked up recreational running and have been running ever since, completing several road races and triathlons, including a full marathon. In 2013, I found CrossFit and learned quickly that I achieved better results with less pain and injury than I did from distance running alone. With the addition of CrossFit training to my regiment, I was able to improve my run times with less time spent on the pavement. Now, with the implementation of CrossFit in my fitness regiment, I am stronger than I have ever been. Additionally, as a licensed mental health professional, I can promise you that exercise is the cheapest therapy you can find!

BEN LANCASTER

CrossFit Coach, Youth Coach

I picked up my first barbell when I was 15 and I have been hooked on fitness ever since. My strength training was centered on whatever body building routine I could find. These routines assisted me as I played football and was a state competitor in the shot put in high school. My passion for fitness continued as I pursued a degree in Exercise Leadership at James Madison University. During my tenure at JMU I served with the Strength and Conditioning Coaches and assisted in training the volleyball, soccer, and tennis teams, as well as the track & field athletes. Upon graduation I served as an Exercise Specialist/Personal Trainer for several years and my day job now is serving as the Athletic/Aquatic coordinator at the local Parks and Rec. I have run 5ks, 10ks and endured the Tough Mudder and Spartan races. In 2014 I joined CrossFit SAW and instantly became passionate with the full body, functional fitness that CrossFit encompasses. The constant variety in workouts, comradery with my peers, and having coaches with equal passions, has renewed my love of exercise.

JEREMY BURKHEAD

CrossFit Coach

My initial introduction to CrossFit was in August of 2014 during the first public workout at CrossFit SAW. I didn’t have an athletic background when I started, but discovered a new found excitement for fitness. My exposure to the constantly varied workouts, Olympic weightlifting, and a supportive community inspired my desire to push myself to be better. After nine short months of CrossFit training I decided to take the CrossFit Level 1 trainers course in order to increase my knowledge base and to assist others in reaching their own fitness goals. Watching people increase in strength, advance technique, and improve their quality of life continues to fuel my passion for CrossFit and the benefits it has on all aspects of one’s life.

CrossFit Coach

I have always loved being active and am very passionate about health and fitness. I started playing competitive sports when I was 8 and continued through college. I played soccer for 13 years along with several years of basketball and volleyball. I studied Exercise Science in college and spent a few years as a personal trainer after graduating. At this time, I also realized I had to become my own coach, as I no longer had a coach and team keeping me accountable. However, this is easier said than done and my results were limited, making it difficult to stay motivated. I joined SAW in October 2014 and it was exactly what I needed. The community of people made it feel like being on a team, and having coaches to constantly push me to be better has helped me to get faster and greater results than I ever did on my own. Plus I fell in love with Olympic weightlifting and the functional aspect of CrossFit. It has made my day job as a massage therapist much more manageable, and I no longer experience the neck and back pain that I was having prior to CrossFit. I decided I wanted to help others do the same and achieve their health and fitness goals, so I attended a CrossFit Level 1 trainers course in August 2015. Helping others along with reaching my own goals continues to fuel my passion for fitness.

My Crossfit journey began as a way to stay fit for my job as a police officer. I quickly came to realize that Crossfit offers so much more than I had expected. At SAW, you will get close attention from the coaches, outstanding programming, a fun atmosphere, and a sense of community that makes you want to come back for more. As someone who started Crossfit in his mid-forties, I understand the hesitation and concern some may have when beginning an intense workout regimen. As a coach, my goal is to assure you that you can and will be successful, whatever your reason for walking through the door, and wherever you are on your fitness journey. Don’t wait for perfect time to start, because that doesn’t exist. Come give us a try now!
